My circle of friends is quite diverse ranging from the super straight-laced 9-5ers to the the wild bohemian night owls. I myself fall somewhere in the middle-leaving me as the common ground between them all. Also, is the fact that as the last standing single chick among many of my friends who are now married or in very serious committed relationships, it is often put upon me to provide the mischief and the fun. At the very least, the singleton is the one with the good gossip, or bad date recap. It is the singleton who also offers insight as to the latest hotspots-for a first date, soon to be single friend, or wild night out. It is he or she, who often becomes the expert dater because though the occasional dryspell, when it rains it definitely pours.
I recently discovered a hidden gem on the Lower East Side for mingling and meeting. On an unexpected, last minute impulse to go out, I decided to meet up with a friend and the bandmates of a close friend of hers after their performance at Pianos. Even on a Monday night Pianos is a pretty happening spot in the city, but we didn't stay there. Instead we ventured across the street and up the block a bit to DarkRoom. Upon entering I knew I had found my new stomping ground. With Prince blasting on the sound system, and people actually dancing, (very attractive people I might add) I was glad to have made the trip downtown. Not five minutes in, a young-but not too young guy started talking to me and bought me a drink. I immediately noticed that although DarkRoom is a bit of a scene even on a Monday night that it was, the crowd was a more welcoming and approachable crowd. And, it was refreshing to have someone approach me with something other than "is that the key to your heart?" using the skeleton key that I wear around my neck as their opening act. I left DarkRoom that evening with more than one phone number and big plans for a return visit on a less-than-impromptu night out.
