Let's just face it... Fairytales don't exist! Guys aren't running around town with a leather quilted pattern Manolo Blahnik in hand searching for the girl that left it at the royal ball. And they sure as hell aren't battling evil octopus witches in the middle of the open sea to save their half-fish girlfriend. However, every once in a while you'll hear about a couple that may have not started out in the most romantical Disney way, but they are no doubt living out a more practical.... Well.... Fairy tale!
Meet Erin. A 20-something young professional from Miami. After years of dating Miami locals, Erin was ready to try something new, someone new, and preferably someone that wasn't from Miami. So what was she to do?! Where does one turn when they're looking for something refreshing in a town full familiar faces? Lucky for Erin, she lives in an era where there's a resourceful outlet to give you exactly what you're looking for... It's called online dating services!
I got a chance to chat it up with Erin and learn exactly how her online dating experience went, and to both of our surprise, it worked out extremely well for her. She's happy, possibly in love, and would not have been in this predicament had she not dropped whatever reservations she had regarding online dating. She stressed that she was initially very hesitant to engage in this new trend of meeting people online, but after watching her roommate date hot guy after hot guy, she figured she'd give it a shot.
"There's a huge stigma about online dating," she explained to me. "I was very wary of the site and what type of creepy guys used it. I worried about if this would be something my parents would agree too, given that I did find a guy from it."
Nonetheless, Erin put her worries aside and her roommate helped her create a profile. After 2 months and 4 interesting dates, Erin finally struck gold when she came across Josh, her current Canadian boyfriend. His profile caught her interest, so she gave it a go and sent him a message, which he quickly responded to. She says they chatted online for 3 weeks before she gave him her number. The chemistry was there, she said, so after a couple of phone calls what more was there to do other than go out for cocktails?
"It was fun. He was different. I was an hour late and he was very forgiving," she gushed. "He really seemed like a genuine person."
Meeting for cocktails eventually turned into dating, and dating (after 2 months) turned into exclusivity. Now 3 months in an official relationship, Erin couldn't be happier with her decision to try out online dating. They're head over hills for each other and make an exceptional couple.
I asked Erin what advice she had for those of us who aren't really hip to online dating. She said, "Online dating seriously gave me an opportunity to meet different men, opportunities that I hadn't had before. It's really easy, you're able to find exactly what you're looking for. It's geared to your specific interest, so you can weed out people you're not interested in."
So maybe Disney just went overboard? So guys aren't fighting off wicked dragon queens to wake up their sleeping beauties. But every so often, there's a chance that something special can happen if you're open minded. If Erin could find something reminiscent of a Prince Charming via internet then there has to be some kind of hope for all of us!
