I've never been much of a keeper of secrets. I wear my heart on my sleeve, I need to talk about situations to process them. Now that I'm in a situation that requires a certain amount of delicacy, I realize why everyone loves having an illicit affair.
There's something thrilling about knowing something that nobody else does. And when you're part of the secret in question, it's even more exciting. Just look at the movies, the headlines. Everyone is hiding something. Everyone loves the thrill of doing something wrong or unexpected. Whether it's cheating (something that I would never do) or engaging in some risky activity on a park bench, there's something about knowing that there will be consequences if you're found out that heats things up.
At work today, after a weekend of bliss in a coworker's bed, I found myself grinning as I walked down hallway, typed up estimates and entered data. Why? Because I knew something nobody else did. I imagined myself telling someone and their jaws dropping in shock I almost spilled the beans but stopped myself because it was just too fun. And it wouldn't be particularly professional. There's a reason such relationships are frowned upon. People talk. People wonder. They start to think that maybe you're receiving extra benefits because of your fraternization. In the words of Gandalf the Grey, "Keep it secret. Keep it safe."
